Essential Oils and Herbs

The herbs from Nepal are known from ancient times. The Himalayas, the world's highest mountain range symbolises a rich reservoir of valuable medicinal and aromatic plants, which are valuable forest resources of Nepal. The country owns diversified range of plants. It boasts approximately 7,000 species of flowering and non-flowering plants. Out of which, around 1,500 species are of medicinal plants. More than 200 species of herbs have already been chemically tested to confirm the medicinal properties.

Though Nepal possesses a huge potential of herbal products, only marginal portions of its indigenous and endemic species have been utilised for commercial purposes. Approximately 150 species of the herbs have been so far selected for trading and industrial use. About 20,000 metric tons of different wild herbs are being collected from the community or state owned forests in Nepal. The main sources of these rare medicinal herbs are located in the high altitude mountains and Himalayan regions of the country.
